Avison Young reports Calgary’s retail market remains stable, driven by population growth and steady demand. Global ocean freight rates hit their lowest since 2023 amid weak imports and oversupply. Avison Young’s latest report shows Calgary’s retail market remains steady, supported by population growth, strong labour conditions, and demand for grocery-anchored and service-based retailers. Limited new development and shifting consumer habits are tightening supply and boosting demand for experiential and convenience-focused retail. With rising rents, stricter lease rules, and new mixed-use projects, Calgary is solidifying its position as a premium retail market.

Global ocean freight rates have fallen to their lowest levels since late 2023, pressured by weak U.S. imports, excess supply, and trade-related frontloading. The decline coincides with new U.S. port fees on China-linked vessels and cautious optimism over a Red Sea ceasefire that may reopen key routes. Despite tensions, carriers are managing costs and rerouting fleets to minimize disruptions, keeping Transpacific rates relatively stable.

An ICSC survey shows 71% of consumers plan to be more selective this holiday season, avoiding retailers that raise prices and spending more time hunting for deals. Despite inflation and tariff concerns, over 90% still plan to shop in stores, with younger shoppers driving visits to discount retailers. Analysts say retailers must focus on engaging in-store experiences and competitive pricing as shoppers tighten budgets but remain active.

AI is transforming logistics through smarter customer service, real-time visibility, and data-driven decision-making, but only for companies with disciplined data and clear ROI goals. Without strong data foundations, experts warn AI investments risk wasted spend and limited value. Over the next decade, AI will dominate workflow automation and customer service, redefining roles while empowering human oversight and strategic innovation.

At ASCM’s CHAINge Conference, leaders from government, retail, and shipping stressed that true supply chain resilience requires C-suite attention and public-private collaboration. Former U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo urged companies to view supply chains as strategic assets, not back-office functions. With tariff uncertainty, infrastructure gaps, and shifting trade flows, executives from IKEA and COSCO emphasized scenario planning and innovation as keys to long-term stability.
